Still no spark. was this the right way to bypass or do I actually have to replace the switch to get spark? also, If the switch was bad would it still let the starter turn and just send no spark? Currently I am registering about 217 volts from the CDI box to coil just no spark and coil is a new aftermarket coil that has Ohm'd out OK. Any Ideas?
No problem (said the novice), I figured I'd just use that ceramic resistor which I got in the kit for use on a 6 volt coil (if needed). But since I had a 12 volt coil, I didn't need it. The tractor ran fine with the resistor block (factory spec part) inline with the 12 volt coil feed. But spark was too weak with the ceramic resistor inline.

I first checked for spark by just pulling off the two plugs on a coil and cranking, no spark. First what ever you do make sure you don't run 12 volts to the solid state. Second make sure you have the correct ignition switch in the tractor. These tractors use a magneto type grounding ignition switch not a battery coil switch. If you did either of these first two you have killed the new solid state.

Also check you key switch. Residual 2 volts indicates a shorted relay or key switch. Spark once then quits sparking sounds like the igniter has failed. If only one cylinder sparks then fails, I would suspect a coil. There is a test procedure in the repair manual for testing the igniter, the voltage regulator, the coils, and the pulsing coils.

If not fuel or spark then check the crank sensor. You can just unplug the cam sensor and try to start it. It will turn over about 10 times before it starts though. But if it's a 96 unplugging the cam sensor won't work.
